15. Red Harvest; Dashiell Hammett (216 pages)
Another excellent Hammett tale; the never-named Continental Op agent comes to town to meet a man, but that fellow ends up dead. It's Poisonville, after all. So, the Op agent sticks around to clean up the town...with a pretty hefty body count in the end.
Good stuff.
