Shocking, but Funny; at the same time
From TVGuide.com:
BUCKING THE TREND: Despite NBC's waning prime-time fortunes, Jay Leno has managed to widen his lead over late-night rival David Letterman. Leno's Tonight Show audience has jumped 4 percent this year, while Letterman's Late Show has slipped 5 percent. The ratings disparity is even more remarkable when you view the shows side by side

Idle Chatter:
I can't understand it.
Letterman is consistently funnier, more topical, and considerably less kiss-ass.
Sigh.
Of course, it was Letterman who was praised as being the next Carson, despite Leno being given his job, at the Emmys!
