A Few Paragraphs

You really can't sum up almost 90 years in a few paragraphs. He was a fascinating man, more friend than grandparent.

Daniel Allan Bunn, 89

PENNSYLVANIA, Sept. 14 - Daniel Allan Bunn, 89, passed away at Mt. Laurel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Clearfield, PA on Sunday, September 12, 2010, following a brief illness. He was born January 23, 1921, North Tonawanda, NY, a son of Allan E. and Mary Ann Speares Bunn. He was a former resident of St. Marys, PA, and most recently of St. Michael's Terrace, DuBois, PA, and at Mt. Laurel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the past three months.

He married Mercedes Fodge in St. Marys, PA, on December 12, 1940 and Dolores Moore Herzing in Emporium, PA, on October 24, 1990.

Mr. Bunn is survived by a son, Richard W. Bunn and wife, Patricia of Bedford; daughter, Tommajean Bunn Young and husband, Thomas of Emporium, PA; grandchildren, Jennifer Bunn Surface and Angela Bunn, both of Bedford, Stephanie Bunn and husband, Matt Riggsby of Knoxville, TN and Christine Young of Emporium, PA; great-grandchildren, Logan Bunn, Chelsea Osti, Alex Riggsby, and Shey Pifer; half-sister, Yolande Josephson of Rutland, SD; brother-in-law. Bernard Moore of Benezette, PA; step-children, Joyce Herzing Gerg and husband, Bob of Abbeville, SC and family and David Herzing of Emporium, PA and family. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Mercedes Fodge Bunn in September, 1986, second wife, Dolores Moore Herzing Bunn in May, 1995, son, Jon A. Bunn in September, 1973, grandson, Daniel J. Bunn in May, 2007 and step-brother, Ray Lukehart and wife, Marie.

Mr. Bunn served as a Sergeant in the US Army Corp of Engineers during WWII. He had been co-owner, with Ralph Tenner, of St. Marys Wood Specialty Company, St. Marys, PA in the 50s. After starting with Stackpole Carbon Company, St. Marys, PA in 1957, he worked for them in Johnsonburg, PA, Farmville, and St. Marys, PA until retiring in 1983. He had been a member of the American Legion, Bennets Valley, PA.

He was an avid fisherman, licensed amateur radio operator, and had continued custom carpentry work until he was in his seventies.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be made to DuBois Ambulance Association.

Barnett Funeral Home, Pennsylvania, is serving the family.

Because it's the only way I can properly tell people like Erica at Purple Rain how much I enjoy their posts.

I'm a Huntress fan, as you may have figured out, so when I found her Helena-centric tumblr I was thrilled. She has good insight into Hel's personality, the things that drive her & make her who she is today. Erica also posts a lot of older Huntress material, which for me is an absolute treat. (And for Amazon.com, free sales marketing!)

But today, when I saw she'd created a video (based on a book I often recommend, Ivory Madison's Huntress: Year One) which beautifully and heart-breakingly tells the story of the Bertinelli family massacre, I knew I had to do, say, something to thank Erica for what she does.

So Erica, I don't tumblr (yet), but I stop by yours daily. I look forward to the visits, & either nod my head in agreement or cheer on something you've brought up. Today, I cried. Excellent job. I thank you.

Even if you don't like comics, you can't help but feel the emotions here. The art is beautiful, the tale tragic.

Day 27: Favorite Origin: I think I'm a Silver Age-r when it comes to origins, for the most part.

Zatara

As a child, he was given a magic kit by his uncle. Despite much practice, he didn't do very well. He came upon* some diaries belonging to Leonardo DaVinci (a distant relative), which he realized were written backwards & by saying the words in that manner, he could create actual magic. When a small fire broke out during a performance, he used this new-found ability to put it out & the audience loved it...thinking it was part of his act.

Zatara continued to use 'real' magic in his shows, as well as a means to fight crime, both street- & meta-level.

*it should be noted that, depending on whet you're reading, Zatara was in fact directed to those books by Nomo, or Dr. Mist. He was orchestrating Zatara's entire life, including his encounter & subsequent marriage to Sindella, with the ultimate goal of Zatanna's birth...who was supposed to be the perfect Homo Magi. Yeah; it's complicated.

Day 26: Least favorite DC “other media": I...don't know? Oh. Yes I do. How about "Superman Returns" & all the pre-Nolan Batman films?! Or the Birds of Prey live-action series. Yes; that's what I'll go with.

Day 25: Favorite DC “other media” (movie, cartoon, etc): DC Animated Universe. Specifically, the work of Bruce Timm.

I think my biggest introduction to comic book characters (remember, I'm a late-bloomer) came from watching the Justice League cartoon. From there, I learned about the Batman & Superman series. I, um, now own all of them. As well as the Batman Beyond series. And what little Static Shock has been released.

The movies that have come out since those shows ended haven't always been a huge success in my book, but the Superman/Batman: Public Enemies & Hal Jordan: First Flight as well as the recently-released Under the Red Hood have been fantastic.

Kevin Conroy will always be my Batman!

You Know You Want To

Read comics in public, that is.

Tomorrow is The First Annual International Read Comics in Public Day, created by the folks at The Daily Cross Hatch.

Pretty simple concept. Reading comics is not something to (only) do huddled in a corner of your house or apartment. No, comics are literature. A comic book is the work of creativity, of art. Writers, artists, letterers, inkers, all this takes talent.

Granted, not every comic book presents some earth-shattering story, but comics address politics, race, sexuality, family dynamics...everything you see on the evening news.

They're topical & relevant. So what if the stories being told happen to involve people with powers or abilities? Or who dress in...brightly colored spandex?

Comics are books. They can be thought-provoking. They can be entertaining. They are discussed, debated & defended with as much passion as current US policy.

And I read them.

Tomorrow, I will be reading a comic book while out shopping & running errands. In fact, Matt & Alex will be doing this as well. We'll be taking pictures of this.

And that picture of me, reading a comic, will be shared with DC Women Kicking Ass & a tumblr created just for the event.

So Saturday, go ...somewhere. Anywhere. Bring a comic, & a camera, with you. Take a picture. Share with the world that comics are awesome. I'll see you out there.

Day 22: Guilty pleasure character?: (still thinking about this one)

Day 21: Favorite DCU Event? Honestly? I have no idea. Can I get back to you on this one?

Day 20: DC Storyline/Book you could read over and over again?: Zatanna: Everyday Magic. Identity Crisis. The Gail Simone Birds of Prey run. Batman/Huntress: Cry for Blood. No Man's Land.

Day 19: Character you used to hate/dislike, but now you don’t?: Easy. Catwoman & Poison Ivy.

I can't explain why I didn't like them. I just knew I didn't. But then I started reading more comics, & while I'd never list either as a favorite character, I find I'm more sympathetic to each of them.

Day 18: Best Butt?; Oh, geez. This one stumped me. I know the easy answer is Nightwing or Catman. But...no. I'm picking someone else.

Day 17: Favorite legacy hero (Hero that took on a previous hero’s ID): Well...duh.

Zatanna Zatara, daughter of Silver Age hero Giovanni "John" Zatara.

Magic runs in the family, as does the tux & top hat.

John was a hero, a member of the All-Star Squadron, & died saving the world.

His daughter's not doing too shabby a job, either.

Day 16: Favorite lantern corps? I...uh. Don't have one? I didn't really follow along with all the Lantern stuff. Sorry. I guess the Green ones?

Day 15: Character that should have their own movie? Hmm...Booster Gold, maybe. He's far more complex than people think, & charismatic & funny enough to entertain the masses.

Day 14: Favorite writer(s): Oy. Again with the tough questions.

.... Mark Waid, Greg Rucka, Gail Simone, Neil Gaiman, Geoff Johns. I just enjoy the stories. Sure, I like some things specifically because someone wrote it, but I guess I don't chase down everything written by someone simply because it's so-and-so.

Day 13: Favorite artist(s): Alex Ross, Dustin Nguyen, Joe Bennet...I just don't know!

Day 12: DC Location You’d Most Like to Visit?: 'd have to say either Atlantis or Themyscira.

Why?

Underwater city. Nation of Amazons. Places of myth & legend. What, you need more?

Day 11: Favorite Elseworlds/Multiverse?: Kingdom Come. This is also the comic book that got me into comics.

A scary, potential future for our heroes. Great dialogue, gorgeous art. It's one of my favorites, period.

Day 10: Most cracktastic moment: Another easy one. From Seven Soldiers of Victory, & yes, it's another Zee-moment.

Having fought a truly epic battle against Zor (& relocating her mislaid self-esteem, which is tied to her magical abilities), Zatanna realizes she's not alone. That there are people watching her...& knowing that this was just one part of a war coming, an invasion that she can't stop on her own, she tries to summon help. By REACHING OUT TO THE READER. She didn't just break the fourth wall, she ends up stepping through & getting to know the people living on the other side.

It's a complicated book, Seven Soldiers, & not easily explained here. But this moment was truly fantastic. And for me, one I'll never forget.

Day 9: Least favorite male characterr: Now this? This was easy. Without hesitation I give you Scarecrow/Dr. Jonathan Crane.

My extreme hatred for this character stems from equally violent feelings toward anyone who harms or terrorizes others for their own amusement. It's bullying on a grand scale.

And I hate bullies.

So your home life wasn't ideal, Crane? Suck it up. No one had a Norman Rockwell childhood. That doesn't give you the right to literally scare innocent people to death.

So...yeah. Really don't like the guy. At all.

Day 8: Least favorite female character: Sorry. But I just can't do this one. I tried. I held off writing this entry, trying to think of one. (Now, if it were a Marvel meme it'd take me two seconds to type 'Emma Frost' in that space...)

But no matter how much thinking & searching I've done, I can't come up with one. And for that I blame the writers.

Because characters I used to not like, or even hate, have been shown in a new light. I find myself understanding them, or feeling some small sympathies for them. Dammit.

Sure, I don't care for Livewire or Silver Banshee, but that might just be the result of parenting a happy, healthy, rambunctious child & craving peace & quiet!

I ran through villains & heroes, but couldn't think of anyone so disliked they deserved a mention.

Maybe it'll come to me later. I reserve the right to edit as I go!

Day 7: Favorite Team/Corps/Family: Shadowpact.

Ok, I know what you're thinking right about now. "Not the Batfamily? What about the Justice League?!" True, Batman & Nightwing & the rest of the clan...love them. I do. And I'm such a fan of the JLA. That I'll read anything about the Birds of Prey is a given. I'd say the Green Lantern Corps could even be a reasonable guess for my 'favorite' team or group.

But see, the above? All the beautiful people. The popular kids.

I, on the other hand, was not one of those kids.

The members of the Shadowpact are all thought to be a little (or in some cases, very) weird. Strange, creepy, & so on. They're not all perfect specimens of the male or female form

I like them because they're different, because they're the outcasts the big names turn to when things get too freaky & your basic Punch, Toss Into a Wall, Intimidate approach doesn't work.

And it's up to a loosely-formed team of a man-turned-demon, a taking primate, a former villain currently operating as a mostly-hero, a refugee from a land of shadows, the protector/punisher of evil-doers for the Jewish population, & a former angel from Heaven to save the day: Blue Devil, Detective Chimp, Enchantress, Nightshade, Ragman & Zauriel (with occasion assistance from Zatanna & Phantom Stranger).

And they meet at a bar that exists in its own pocket dimension. It's the secret hang-out the rest of the mainstream capes can't access!

They're weird, yes. But that's what sets them apart from any number of brute-force heroes out there. They get the job done because they're different.

Day 6: Power or Ability You’d Like to Steal: Ha. Easy one. One small-ish child & five dogs means travel is next to impossible. So while flying would save on airline hassles, enhanced strength would mean I could carry those giant bags of dog food with one hand...give me teleportation.

The power to get from my couch to the home of any one of my many friends I never get to see these days? Perfect.

Day 5: Favorite rogues gallery: Tough question. There aren't too many organized groups of villains, & I don't like most of Batman's bad guys. Plus, I knew Shelley would take Flash's Rogues!

After some thought, it was obvious I'd be crossing into the supernatural again.

And while they're not labeled with some catchy title, the forces of Hell are pretty darn formidable.

Right, I know. I'm supposed to be talking about my favorites. It's true, they are. The rulers of Hell, their servants & agents & slaves tend to be smarter than your average bank-robbing, 'I'll make you pay!' guy in a colorful costume.

No, they're busy controlling the various regions of Hell, in addition to plotting ways to take over our world.

Powerful, clever, charming, revolting, beautiful, hideous, & completely lacking morals or souls. That's not an easy thing to go up against.

I don't root for them, or feel sympathy or 'understand their point of view'. These are BAD GUYS. The worst of the worst. But the battles, sometimes only a battle of wills, are always entertaining.

Day 4: Character you would bring back from the dead: Hmm. Once again, I have two (technically three) for this.

Big Barda & Mr. Miracle (Scott Free). A former Female Furie & the 'favorite' of Granny Goodness. All couples have to overcome some obstacles in their relationships, but these two had to deal with Darkseid!
They were fun & interesting. And so very unexpected.
Eventually settling in the suburbs, they were one of the best & most loving pairings in the DC universe. So of course, they had to die.
(alright, they've been seen alive since but not a thing's been done with them. So...bring 'em back.)

Second choice: The Question

Vic Sage. Investigative reporter & vigilante. Loner. Paranoid. Crackpot. Conspiracy theorist. He was called a lot of things. But he was also the second-best detective after Batman, & he fought for the same things all the Metas did. Just in his own way. He spoke out against corruption, tried to clean up Hub City & had a strong sense of justice.
He was interesting & annoyed the caped crowd & so, of course, he was given cancer. Died.
The mantle was taken up by another, but it looks like even she is being written out (at least for the time being).
Once again, bring 'im back.

Day 3: Favorite Friendship: Zatanna Zatara & John Constantine.

No, I'm serious.

Yes, they're exes. With a pretty messed up history. But that's also what binds them.

Constantine set in motion events that led to Zee's father's, Giovanni "John" Zatara, death. A death she also feels some responsibility for.
But Zee is a loving, compassionate character. Over time, she forgave Constantine. For his part, he doesn't have many friends. Because...he usually gets them killed (see above). In fact, Zee & his long-time buddy Chaz may be the only ones left.
And while Constantine has a bad habit of only showing up in her life during times of crisis, she never refuses him.

John has no interest in, or patience for, 'capes'. And while Zee works with the Justice League & the occasional magic-based hero, she's never fully considered herself one of them.

Unlike most they know or work with, they understand one another. Zee can see through John's BS, & he doesn't sugarcoat anything to spare her feelings. He knows she could easily turn him into a coat rack. She knows he's a selfish pain in the ass who uses people like the matches he lights for his never-ending supply of Silk Cuts.

But Zee also knows that, if asked, John would be there for her. No matter the situation.
Oh, sure. He'd complain about it & make snarky comments while trying to get her to sleep with him again, but he'd still show up.
And she's not one to turn down a friend in need. Even one who can throw her entire life off-balance.

It's weird, it's infrequent, but it's there. Lovers to friends. John & Zee.

Day 2: Favorite Male Character: (sigh) Well, of course I'm going to say Batman. Loved the guy since childhood. Didn't really get to know him, though, until the last few years. But whether it's the live-action of my childhood, grim Bats of Miller or anything in between, it's Batman titles I buy the most, Batman action figures I have in a range of sizes...& Bob Kane art on my wall.

...although Hal Jordan & the Question run a pretty close second!

Day 1: Favorite Female Character Not fair, Shelley!! I'm terrible at picking favorite...anything. I have many & I refuse to pick just one. ...Ok, fine. I'll call it a draw.

Wonder Woman has been my hero/role model since I was, oh, I don't know, three or four? No matter how badly she's been written over the years, the idea of her (and her ideals) keep her both relevant, to me, & loved.

Zatanna What is it about a character that makes you over-identify with them? I'm not gorgeous nor do I have long, sexy legs. Ok...I also lack world-bending, innate magical skills. But who she is, what she's been through; that speaks to me.

Read this week:

Zatanna #3. Good. Really good. Made up for the opening page of issue #1 good.

Nice resolution, made me cry...

Birds of Prey #3. Finally got my copy. It's...a bit weird. Total cliffhanger ending. Still not liking the art.

Brightest Day #6. Still a lot of questions. The end was unexpected & I have no idea what's going on!

Avengers, The Heroic Age #3. Yeah, I know. A Marvel title! I still feel like I'm playing catch-up, coming from a DC background & not always knowing who the heck is on the page, but I'm giving this a try. So far, I'm enjoying it but, being both new to Marvel & not terribly invested/devoted to it, I could easily be missing things die-hard fans are raging over.

Astonishing Spider-Man & Wolverine #2. Um...how 'bout that? Another one. I think I picked this title partly because I role play with a really good Spidey & Logan!

Serious doom & gloom what with the whole apocalyptic story, but I've no complaints so far.

X-MEN #1. Heh...would you look at that. Another one!

I read the run leading up to this, & despite my initial reaction of 'Vampires? Really?', I can see how this could be interesting.

Streets of Gotham #14. I swear I missed an issue or two somewhere along the line. I really want to see how they handle things here, with Bruce's return not too far away.

X-Force #1. ...oh, hey. Marvel. Again.

Domino & Wolverine. Ninja assassins. ...Guess we'll see how this goes.

Superman #701. Ok, I succumbed. I gave in to the hype. I'm reading about Superman walking across America.

Booster Gold #27, 28 & 29. On the recommendation of a friend, I'm reading Booster Gold. Kind of heavy subject material to jump in with, you know...Black Lanterns, devastation of a city, but I'm told it gets better!

Also: Civil War. Hardcover.

I came into this with almost no knowledge of this event. So obviously I'm a bit behind on things.

The story made me angry at some of the characters, even if I understood why they did certain things. I really don't know what else to say...it's still bubbling around in the brain & I'm not yet sure how or what I feel about it.

WHY, YES. I DO READ COMICS.

Comics writer Gail Simone asked fans, readers & trolls to share the comic that made them admit 'Oh, god...I'm a comics geek'.

I grew up loving superheroes. Lynda Carter as Diana Prince, aka Wonder Woman, was my hero & role model. Saturday mornings weren't complete without the Superfriends (shut up, I know) or Spider-Man & His Amazing Friends (while enjoying BooBerry cereal, naturally). Adam West & Burt Ward taking their turn as Batman & Robin could be found in syndication (you know, back when there were only four or five channels).

I didn't read comics, though. I'm not sure I knew anyone who did. Certainly not in my family, or any friends. Maybe the teenager who bagged groceries at the A&P.

I remember having a Wonder Woman issue (don't ask which one, that was more years ago than I'd like to admit), & I read it over & over. It was a source of pride, almost. So of course, my mother threw it away one day...

When I somehow, miraculously, became attractive to men in my early twenties, the fact I liked both sports and comics had me looking for the proverbial beat-them-off stick.

But it wasn't until several years into my marriage that I started reading comics. Matt wasn't reading any titles when we first met, but had years of Hellblazer around. I didn't have a clue who this Constantine guy was, so I wasn't really interested. It was seeing the cover of 'Kingdom Come' that made me pick up, begin reading & (the literary equivalent of) devour the title. I didn't know all the characters, I wasn't aware of history or backstory, but that didn't matter. This was a tale about heroes! And when your maiden reading includes art by Alex Ross, congratulate yourself for not spoiling the pages with drool.

I'm not sure of the progression, exactly, but this title took me to Bruce Timm's animated world, with the Justice League, Batman & Superman. I read Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-MEN run (my first conscious exposure to Marvel, since as a child DC/Marvel meant jack to me), then on to Frank Miller's take on Batman. I started buying comics. A collected volume here, something interesting there.

Today? I have a pull list. A pull list! I can talk about characters & story arcs with fans who've been reading since childhood. I join in with those who say Jason Todd & Cassandra Cain are overlooked or mishandled by writers or editors. I collect action figures, for crying out loud! I'm a wife & mom, over the age of thirty (none of your business) & can pull out my Obsidian or Clock King figure should the need arise.

I..yeah. Right.

Anyway, that's my origin tale.

A very clean Fluffy. His fur, now washed, is so soft as to be addictive...

Wicklow. Talk about soft! But the poor guy, the mosquitoes have hit him hard, and he's biting and scratching like crazy. Leaving him with oddly adorable pink-with-brown-spotted skin visible. And it seems the coloring of his fur matches the spots!

Duke. Sweet, sweet boy. Soft and clean, and curled up near me. At peace.

TrueBlood

Like Spike tells the Scoobies, it's always about the blood...

I can barely contain my excitement: HBO's new TrueBlood series, based on the fantastic series by Charlaine Harris, premieres on my birthday!

Ok, we don't subscribe to HBO, so this may be a problem. But by golly, from the trailer and all the amazing promotional work done for the show, I Have to see this. The cast looks Right, and the spirit of the books comes through.

I'm re-reading the series (for the third time) in anticipation...this sure is turning out to be a pretty nice birthday present!

Saturday Fun

Riding The Rails

This past weekend, along with Alex's grandparents, we took a 90 minute ride on the Three Rivers Rambler, an old diesel engine (circa 1950).

Alex was in heaven. Despite the heat (one of the hottest days of the summer yet), he could barely tear himself away from the window. There were various landmarks to look at, but truthfully, we just enjoyed traveling 'old school'.

Miracles Can Happen

Almost a decade ago, my small hometown found itself buzzing with the news that a local woman had been raped and murdered. There really wasn't much 'real' crime; lots & lots of DUI's and drug-related charges. Some domestic stuff. But drugs made their way in, heroin mostly. I think drug arrests actually beat out those for alcohol, and this is a town with it's own brewery.

Mrs. Challingsworth was just a nice lady earning a living with a beauty shop in her home. I didn't know her, really, but I'd walked by her house hundreds of times and stopped and said hello and exchanged minor chit chat often.

I couldn't help but cry for her family, as years went by and the ONLY murder case in the county went unsolved. It really did seem as though the police were doing nothing. Let's say there wasn't a lot of faith in the local force...

Erin contacted me yesterday, letting me know that wonder-o-wonders, an arrest has been made in Mrs. Challingsworth's death.

A fellow, just a couple of years younger than us, allegedly confessed to the crime. He intended to rob the place...as he'd been doing to other homes...to feed his drug habit. He didn't expect her to be home. So apparently, plan B was to rape, beat, and kill her.

He claims he didn't do it alone. If that's true, I hope it doesn't take another nine years to catch the guy.

Toothless Wonder

To our shock & amazement, Alex has lost a tooth. Already.

It became loose Thursday. Friday night, it came out!

Leaving us entirely unprepared. One, not expecting this sort of thing for...a year, perhaps, we had nothing worthy of Tooth Fairy giftiness.

Two, I have no idea what the going rate for teeth is these days!

Alex could barely contain his excitement; he'll tell anyone he meets the story of how he lost his tooth. And we managed to find something small we'd had as an emergency treat for him, and a handful of quarters. Fortunately, Alex is a very very sound sleeper, or the noise from quarters rattling around in a plastic container would have left us red-faced and without explanation.

One Man's Junk is Another Kid's Art Project

Last week Alex school went 'green'. They celebrated Earth Day, learned about recycling, all sorts of things.

There was even a family project: use items headed for the trash or recycling, and create 'art'.

We were in the process of going through all of Alex's toys, whittling out the old/baby-ish stuff, as well as the ones missing key parts, anyway (all part of the new floor & 'big boy' room endeavor).

So, using bits & pieces from his toys, and other things we had lying around, we created a diorama.

Stores and a fire station!

A sort of general store; this place sells diamonds, tools, and outdoor gear.

This is where the firefighters sleep between rescues.

And here's the engine room, complete with a shute for the guys to use. I'd also like to point out that we NEVER consume Honeycomb in our house; we'd bought this for a snack mix for a kid's party we 'catered'. And it sat on the shelves for almost six months, the rest uneaten. I was almost ashamed to send that in!

And of course, there had to be a book store. Alex sells all kinds, too.

It was fun. We all had our jobs, we got more junk out of the house, and yay...homework completed on time!

Well, Good for Him

Just about the funniest and smartest stuff on late-night TV can be found on the Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson.

He's funny, yes; but he's also smart and charming, without coming across as a suck-up, he's honest without being cranky (ehem), and always willing to make an @ss of himself for a laugh.

And clearly, I'm not the only one who thinks so: Ferguson Beats Conan in ratings for first time.

Way to go, cheeky monkey.

Just how far is it from Gotham to Metropolis, anyway? If Alex's map is any indication, not far at all. And, apparently, the route crosses a war zone.

Matt drew the cities, at our request. Clearly, Gotham. Wayne Enterprises, the Bat signal...

And if you look carefully in the upper right of the sidewalk, you'll see what can only be Metropolis. I mean...it's the Daily Planet!

And Alex, as always, had to say something cute. He told we should leave a note that read "Dear Clark, this is your house. My daddy drew it for you."

8. Harley & Ivy; Paul Dini, Judd Winick, Bruce Timm, (136 pages)
I hadn't known, initially, that the character of Harley Quinn was created for the perfect example of television programming known as Batman: The Animated Series. The episodes where Harl & Ivy pair up, whether for a caper or just a 'day in the life', were wonderful.
So a book, dedicated to their antics, was a lovely surprise.
I'm definitely a fan of Paul Dini, and I can comfortably place Bruce Timm on a pedestal next to Joss Whedon in my temple of TV greats.
This was fun. There was a bit of insight into the characters...which way does Ivy swing?, for example.
Good little read.

9. Wonder Woman: The Greatest Stories Ever Told; Charles Moulton, George Perez, H.G. Peter, Phil Jimenez (192 pages)
Ah, my hero.
I've adored Wonder Woman since childhood. Without being a comic book geek, no awareness of her origins, I found her to be everything I could dream of. Strong, beautiful, compassionate, fierce. I grew up with Linda Carter, and the Superfriends. No comments, please.
Over the years, I've read and learned more, and it only makes me love her more. Yeah, I know. She's a comic book character. But she's still my hero.
This collection was a neat little look at her history, from the early days to some re-jiggering of her back story, to more current events. I may have read it too quickly, and now I'm looking into more.

10. Justice, Volume 1; Alex Ross, Jim Krueger, Doug Braithwaite (160 pages)
Oh, my. Alex Ross. The guy's only a few years older than me, and I'm in awe of him. His art is amazing. I could spend days looking at his work...it truly needs no words.
But this book has words, and they frighten me. A world where our heroes are being picked off, one by one. One where the bad guys are not just taking over, but besting the members of the Justice League. No one hurts my Batman (one very good reason I'll never read R.I.P. or the Vampire issues)
It was over far too soon, and I've ordered Volume 2, which is on it's way now. The final issues, Volume 3, are bundled with an Amazon pre-order, and won't reach me till early June.
I don't know if I can wait that long to find out what happens...

This Darth's for You

We found this Vader helmet at a church-sponsored kid's used-clothing sale last weekend. We rarely bother with the toys, but Matt wanted to stop this time. The helmet, which on it's own is completely awesome, has a battery-powered microphone/transmitter that alters the wearer's voice to something very Vader-like.
It also has a few pre-programmed Darth quotes, obtainable by pushing a few of the buttons on the attached box.

Alex is positively in love with this thing, which...I suppose...should make us a bit nervous. The Force is strong with this one.

Anyway, we had to take a picture for 'Uncle Robby'. We knew he'd be so proud...

5. The Batman Handbook: The Ultimate Training Manual; Scott Beatty, David Hahn (192 pages)
This is a fun & clever little book. In no way advocating vigilante-ism, it does break down the various skills and education needed to do the things the Dark Knight does. Many, many, forms of martial arts, forensic education, computer skills and equipment, just about everything. It was fascinating.

6. The Mother Hunt; Rex Stout (224 pages)
Another good Nero Wolfe story; it's always fun to read the source material and compare it to the A&E series. I find myself hearing Timothy Hutton & Maury Chaykin's voices as I read...which isn't such a bad thing.

7. Carrot Cake Murder (Hannah Swensen Mysteries); JoAnne Fluke (288 pages)
I like this series. Not because it's the greatest literary accomplishment ever, but because it's a 'fun read' and a quick diversion. I mean quick, too. I think I polished this one off in less than 3 1/2 hours.
It's a bit wordy...too many words to describe the simplest things, and holy crap; make up your mind about the guys, already? Mike's a jerk, Norman's sweet. But they include recipes...actual recipes, which is always a selling point for me. Not haute cuisine, but good old home-style dishes. Cookies and cakes and 'hot dishes' (casseroles, where I'm from). Again, a fun read.

Milestone

Ok, proud mommy moment here.

The past week or so, Alex has been reading words. Lots of words, with no prompting from us. Just...reading them out.

Last night, he was in the dining room and asked Matt to come help him with a page in an activity book he's been working through.

He said he needed to 'Help Batman find Robin'.

As it turned out, that was the sentence at the top of the page.

1. DC Comics Encyclopedia

2. The Forensic Files of Batman; Doug Moench (320 pages)
A gift from Matt, and as he put it, the title might as well have read 'The Forensic Files of Batman, Stephanie'. Adding that if sushi were somehow involved, it'd be the perfect gift.
This book was amazing. Filled with actual forensic history and procedures, and written with the true voice of Batman/Bruce Wayne. There were case files and journal entries, some relating to 'known' Gotham baddies, like the Joker and Scarecrow, others more...or perhaps I should say less fantastic like a landlord raping/murdering a tenant or a serial killer (without costume or face paint) on the loose.
Such a good book; I stayed up to finish it. And immediately wished there were more...

3. The Man Who Saved Britain: A Personal Journey into the Disturbing World of James Bond; Simon Winder (312 pages)
When I'd first seen this title, I thought it was going to be a history of Bond; his beginnings and so on.
It was a much different book. Instead, it was a history of England, her flailing after the first World War, a country barely sewn together after the second, and it's astonishing fall in the sixties and seventies. How the rest of the world watched in horror as this once power shriveled to almost nothing. And how Fleming's creation mirrored all that was wrong with Britain at the time, how neither 007 or his home country were willing to change or adapt, and what those results were.

I found it a deeply fascinating book, and I learned a great deal about British history in the process (not something we covered at SMAHS). I found myself reading passages to Matt, because the author was clearly someone we'd enjoy talking with...his sense of wordplay, his grasp of the language itself, was nothing short of beauty.

He lost me in the final chapter, though. I was hoping for, expecting, a certain finish. One that would tie the other beautifully-written ones together, but it simply didn't happen.

However, for the other seven or eight chapters, this book is well worth reading.

4. Batman Chronicles: Volume One; Bill Finger & Bob Kane (192 pages)
We go back to the beginning.
The absolute earliest Batman comics. I'd read a few last year, but having them all together like this is genius. Yes, I'm a Batman fan. Yes, I'm a girl who reads comics. Deal with it.

My 2 Minutes

I'm famous!

Or, rather, my house is.

Last night our area got hit by some pretty serious storms. There was the possibility of winds getting up to 65-75 MPH.

Fortunately, our little neighborhood wasn't hit too badly, but a nice, ivy-covered tree did crack apart and take down some power lines.

Our street has been closed since last night (and of course, today was trash day...sigh), and for whatever reason, they're still doing maintenance.

And bright & early, there was a local news van parked outside, and sure enough, a skinny young thing and her camera man were staked out in my yard, filming 'the big story'.

I didn't stick around to see which way they finally decided to film, but at some point today, either my trees and yard, or my house, were on the telly.

I've only managed to squeeze in one so far this year, but I have so many pre-orders lined up for this year (new releases from favorite authors), it'll be hard not to do well.

Yes, I'm a DC fan. Batman & Wonder Woman have been my heroes since childhood, but there was so much I didn't know about the wonderful world of DC. So many heroes and villains, so much back story. Amazing, in-depth book. Images of each and every character, with history and current status and much more written about each. I'd been wanting this book for some time, and it was a most welcome Christmas gift. I spent what little December free-time I had read through it, and it's a treasure.

Save Us From Reality

TV, that is.

I support the writer's strike. I'm not happy about it (the thought of no new Chuck or Pushing Daisies for...ever?....saddens me), but I understand their point(s).

So, I also support the fan campaign to show the purse-string holders how I feel.

Give the writers the four cent increase on DVD sales. After all, they wrote the words spoken by the actors, who make considerably more money. And what do the writers get?

Four cents for every twenty dollar DVD sold.

To show the PTB we (or at least, I, care), I'm willing to give the writers the raise myself.

I Heart Chuck

Watched Chuck and Heroes last night.

Heroes...eeee! So many questions! I have truly missed this show. And how cool to have Agent Weiss (Parkman) & Sark (Takezo Sensei) on the same show again? (because to me, they are always Weiss & Sark, sorry Greg & David).

And Chuck? One of my new favorite shows. So fun! And Chuck, himself? Is it sad that I know that guy? I mean, have known many just like him? Nice, sweet, sort of hapless dorks? But, awesome, fun, and funny, show.
