Meeting the Kwo-tah
So, in my attempt to read lots and lots of books this year, I'm ordering lots and lots of them.
Two good sources for reading material:
Zooba
Edward R. Hamilton
I learned about Zooba through another food blogger. And it's fantastic.
Zooba's a kind of book-of-the-month club, except it doesn't suck.
To join, you pay $9.95 a month. What that gets you is a guaranteed book.
See, every single book Zooba offers is just $9.95.
I'm so not kidding.
No shipping and handling charges. No hidden fees. Just five cents short of ten bucks will get you any book in their catalog.
You set up a list of books you'd like to have. Each month, the first book on your list is shipped to you, and your credit card is charged just $9.95. If you feel like buying a bunch of books at once (as I did for Christmas), it's still $9.95 a book.
It's a good company, and while they don't carry older titles, if there's something new you'd like to purchase (including hard cover editions), you can't beat the service.
This month I got The Arab Table, and other books on my list include
SIMPLY MING
by Ming Tsai and Arthur Boehm
THE FOOD YOU WANT TO EAT
by Ted Allen
NEVER HAVE YOUR DOG STUFFED
by Alan Alda
SUNSTROKE
by Jesse Kellerman
SUPERFOODS HEALTHSTYLE
by Steven G. Pratt, M.D., and Kathy Matthews
SNOBS
by Julian Fellowes
THE FUNNY THING IS...
by Ellen DeGeneres
FAGIOLI
by Judith Barrett
SUSHI, AMERICAN STYLE
by Tracy Griffith
TERESA OF AVILA
by Shirley du Boulay
THE ULTIMATE PEANUT BUTTER BOOK
by Bruce Weinstein & Mark Scarbrough
ONCE UPON A TART
by Frank Mentesana and Jerome Audureau; with Carolyn Carreno
A BAKER'S TOUR
by Nick Malgieri
Yeah, it's mostly cookbooks. But if I can get them cheaper through Zooba than Amazon? Guess where I'm shopping.
Hamilton Books is a company my grandfather told me about many years ago. They deal in overstocks, close-outs, and things like that. But they have a wide selection of subjects, and the prices are killer.
Where else can you purchase hard cover books for $2.95? Brand new?
Hamilton sends out a paper catalog every so often, and the hard part is limiting myself to just a 'few' books.
A new catalog arrived in yesterday's mail, and here's what we're getting this time:
CALENDAR GIRL: Sweet & Sexy Pin-Ups of the Postwar Era.
ERROL FLYNN: Satan's Angel
THE SKEPTIC: A Life of H.L. Mencken
DAZZLER: The Life and Times of Moss Hart
GENT 146: The True Story of a Nazi Spy in America
AN EYEWITNESS HISTORY OF WORLD WAR II
THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA ( a copy for Alex)
THE WORLD OF DICK AND JANE AND FRIENDS
DICK AND JANE, HERE AND THERE
I also orderd a VHS copy of Carrotblanca, the Bugs Bunny 'Casablanca' film.
And all this? Fifteen books and a movie? Less than seventy bucks.
I do hope you'll give both companies a look...and happy reading!
