Hold Still

GG
You have the Goya girl look. A Goya girl had an air
of extreme elegance and sophistication. They
liked richness of every kind. The artists
excelled in painting brocades and tapestry,
cloth of gold and silver, gauzy fabrics and
black lace. You could have modeled for the
great Spanish painters, such as Valasquez and
Goya. Both were painters to the royal court of
Spain.

Peter Lorre, selling breakfast

Maybe it's just me, but I think the ghost looks like Lorre!

Which General Mills monster-themed cereal mascot are you?

Boo Berry

You are a blue, bowtie-clad ghost with drooping eyelids. Your blueberry-flavored cereal, while still in circulation, is excruciatingly hard to find, and countless cereal consumers have never even heard of you let alone tasted a bowl of the marshmallow-filled cereal which bears your name.

What Day Is It?

Wow...it's Friday already? How did that happen? Friday quizzes below.

We're one whole week into the new year...how's yours going?

I think I'm doing alright, so far. This month holds some milestones for me. On the first, I celebrated nine years as a vegetarian (no, I didn't stop eating meat as a resolution...I don't make resolutions. I simply used it as a good starting point.), which is an accomplishment. It hasn't always been easy...when I first started, I knew very little about being a vegetarian; I didn't even know any vegetarians! I just knew I couldn't, in good conscience, eat animals any longer. Lots of grief and pressure from family and friends. Those first few months were filled with learning experiences (this is where I became a serious label-reader: you'd be surprised how many innocuous products contain animal bits!). But, here I am. Nine years, and one week later. Still going veg. Funny; my friend Nate will ask if I'm still doing that vegetarian thing...like it's a phase! Silly boy.

In a couple of weeks, Matt and I will celebrate six years since we first...connected. 'Met' isn't quite right, as we only exchanged emails. We didn't actually meet for another nine and a half months.
But six years? I have to say I'm pretty happy about that!

And of course, we're just months away from our three-year wedding anniversary, as well as five years since I moved to California to be with Matt.
And Alex is almost two!

Wow...again. Who's been sucking the time away from me?

Random Thought

You know when you're watching a television show or a movie, and displayed for your viewing pleasure (and plot advancement) are shelves covered with photographs of smiling, happy couples?

What I've always wondered was this: who, exactly, was supposed to have taken those pictures? You know, who took the picture of the studly yet sensitive interchangeable hunk proposing to his ambitious and gun-shy ingenue? The proposal that was supposed to have happened when they were alone, together, on a mountain top in the Swiss Alps?

I would actually get annoyed with Buffy for just that sort of thing. Sure, I understand it's a way of reinforcing a point or a relationship...but when you strive for realism in so many other ways, don't forget the photo collages!

18,000 Words Worth

I've had a bunch of photos piling up. Here they are.

Alex, showing signs of some bad habits. I honestly don't know where he got it...we barely even use our cell phone!

The winter air does bad things to the hair...

I just love this one...

Alex, post-bath.

Master of his domain?

They're not all of Alex, I promise.

But he is cute, you have to admit!
All by himself, he figured out which shoe went on which foot...smart kid.

He's now sitting at the table like a big boy.

He's even helping with the household tasks.

And he loves his bubblebaths...Mr. Bubble!

We recently bought some put-it-together-yourself furniture, some much needed furniture.
We got an armoire, although this is not the best possible picture.

To the left is my little exercise equipment corner. Need. More. Space.

Here's the dresser in our room. Our walls are mostly painted; but we ran out of blue...

More from our bedroom:
Here's another of the three fireplaces in our house.
And yes, I'm showing the world the mess beneath it. I'm human.

You can't exactly tell, but on the left is a couple of lovely pieces we picked up in Ireland, a candlestick from a fabulous pottery shop at the very end of the Dingle Peninsula, and a ring holder (Beleek) we picked up at the Dromoland Castle gift shop...and at the other end is beautiful stained-glass candleholder my sister-in-law, Terri, made for me.

Our comfy bed. Wicklow enjoys it there, too.

Speaking of Wicklow...

And Donegal is such a good watchdog...nobody's getting near my purse!

My guys, hanging out on the couch.

We all love each other in this house

Entertaining is fun!

And finally! Here's my cookbook shelf!

I'm a Retrosexual

Yes, I am. And quite proud of it.

What's a retrosexual, you might ask.

I really like this definition.

I recently came across the site for Collectors Press, and never before have I seen so many printed-just-for-me books!
Retro cooking, entertaining, pin-ups, you name it. I particularly want the Retro Housewife.

And to make my 1950's kitchen even cooler, I'm looking into Mummert Sign Company; I can find all kinds of nifty, recently-made-but-looks-like-old signs.

And one of these days, I really will greet Matt at the door, wearing a dress, pearls and heels, holding his mocktail, and tell him in a sing-song voice, "Welcome home, dear...dinner will be ready in just a few minutes! Why don't you relax and read the paper till then?"

That would totally freak him out...!
